I thought it was about time I did some local food reviews so I decided to start at Village Bakery Cafe.
This is the home of Dubbo’s best pie, and actually the home of Australia’s best at times. It’s won a lot of awards for their pies and in my opinion they are definitely worthy winners. Their pies have thick, tasty pastry with great filling. This time I tried the steak, bacon and cheese pie. In the past I have had the plain steak pie and highly recommend that so this time thought I’d try something different.
I must admit I was a little unsure how good it would be when I pulled it out of the bag. I’ve had pies in the past where the cheese and bacon are on top and unfortunately this usually just doesn’t work. It’s like you’re just eating a plain pie with a sprinkling of bacon and cheese. But unlike previously it wasn’t like they had just put a little garnish on top so they could rename their pie but not really change much. It worked really well. There was a thick layer of bacon and cheese and with each bite it tasted like it was part of the pie and not just an afterthought.
They serve a wide variety of cakes, salads, sandwiches and rolls, also made to order hot chips, toasted sandwiches and focaccias.
On top of that they do a mean neenish tart, ok so it’s just a neenish tart but I love them so I will talk them up. But you also have to try their Honey Rollette which really is tasty as and not just a favourite of mine.
Here’s a few other photos from inside…
That last photo is a little foggy, I’m not sure if it was on the inside of the cabinet or on the outside from my heavy breathing.
I give the Village Bakery Cafe 4 fluffy cup cakes out of 5.
